How was it working with rising star Imran Khan in Kidnap?

It was a pleasure working with him and seeing a young man like him have such immense confidence. He has done a wonderful job in the film. I just hope he remains the way he is right now. He is humble, and may God bless him in all his endeavours.

Did being a father help you play Minissha Lamba’s father in the film?

Absolutely! The story of Kidnap was narrated to me a long back. It was supposed to be made soon after Dhoom released. At that time, Adi [Aditya Chopra] told me that he could not think of any other actor except me in the role of the father after he saw the television show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. He said the way I interacted with my daughter, Trishala, was very moving.

At times, it struck me that what if it were my own daughter, what would I have done? You become helpless no matter how much money you have. It’s really a very scary thought.

Actually, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR is more on the lines of a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film. It’s not heavy on your mind, even though there’s ample drama happening every now and then. But everything is presented without going overboard.

WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR works because of its simplicity. Expect no glitz-n-glam here. In fact, it doesn’t even have a strong plot since it’s a character-driven film. Yet, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR keeps your interest alive in most parts.

Final verdict? Watch WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR for its simplicity. Its strength lies in its story and how well a seasoned director like Shyam Benegal narrates it. Let’s just say, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR is certainly welcome!

Mahadev [Shreyas Talpade] is one of the few educated young men in Sajjanpur. His ambition is to be a novelist, but finds it easier to make a living by writing and reading letters sitting next to the post office. His ability to write persuasive letters makes him popular with the largely non-literate population of the town.

Aware of this power, he soon uses his talent to manipulate people with amusing and sometimes not such amusing results.

Shyam Benegal may be best known for intense films, but as you watch WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR, it dawns upon you that he’s equally proficient when it comes to light entertainers. The character portrayed by Shreyas and his interaction with various people make the proceedings exciting.

Note his scenes with the goonda who’s aiming to be a politician [Yashpal Sharma] or one of the orthodox ladies of the village [Ila Arun]. Even the romantic scenes with his childhood sweetheart [Amrita Rao], now married to someone else, are cute. The twists and turns in the second hour are the best part of the enterprise. Also, the end is very novel.

On the flip side, the unwarranted songs in the narrative spoil the show. Ideally, the film could’ve done without any song. Besides, the length should’ve been controlled.

Every actor in WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR delivers a sparkling performance, but the show belongs to Shreyas Talpade. This is his most accomplished performance since IQBAL. Amrita Rao is admirable. It’s at par with VIVAH. Yashpal Sharma [terrific], Ila Arun [superb], Divya Dutta [effective], Ravi Kissen [wonderful], Rajeshwari [nice] and Ravi Jhankal [exceptional] are delightful. Kunal Kapoor’s presence comes as a surprise.

On the whole, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR is an interesting watch. At the box-office, the film has the potential to go from strength to strength with a positive word of mouth.

There’s so much to explore when you talk of saas-bahu shows and the stock market. And Shona takes full advantage of the limitless possibilities the subject material has to offer. So there you go… there’s a love triangle [also a fourth angle], the nosey house wives who get drawn to the stock market, a one-sided love affair of a stock broker…

Shona’s execution of the material is refined, in fact shades better when compared to CHUPKE SE. In fact, a number of scenes are expertly handled, but Shona’s writing is an issue here. It unravels perfectly — the sequence of event is just right — but it takes its own sweet time to reach the finale. Ideally, the film should’ve been shorter in terms of duration. A running time of 1.30 hors would’ve only created a better impact.

As things stand now, SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX is enjoyable in parts, but a concise length would’ve helped.

With her mother Binita [Kirron Kher] leaving her father and also their comfortable home in Kolkata, Nitya [Tanushree Dutta] finds herself in the new environs of Navi Mumbai. Finding her bearings in a new city could be tough, but she does so thanks to one of her neighbours, Ritesh [Ankur Khanna].

Binita is befriended by the women in the colony and joins their kitty parties. Binita’s father had left her some shares and she wants to dispose them off. She meets Firoz [Farouque Shaikh], an eccentric stock broker, who teaches her the ropes of correct investing. In the meantime, the group of kitty party ladies feel that Binita is up to something dubious. However, Binita introduces them to Firoz and they decide to invest in stocks.

Stock market fluctuations, kitty parties, soap operas and the changing equations amongst the youth form the crux of the story.

Shona Urvashi goes unconventional this time as far as the subject is concerned, but there’re times when the unconventional theme meets with a conventional conclusion. Take Masumeh’s character, for instance. She’s a two-timer and after what transpires at the shaadi ka mandap, it’s easy to predict what’s in store next.

Similarly, the hose wives turning their eye towards the stock market is novel, but a buoyant 30,000 points sensex has them rolling in wealth and that looks far-fetched. Yet, there’s no denying that SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX is engaging in parts. Only thing, Shona should’ve been far more objective and ensured a shorter length. Also, the fluctuations n the stock market may not appeal universally.

The music is functional, but the best part is that the songs are of maximum 1-minute duration. Diego Rodriguez’s camerawork is flawless. Plus, the housing complex in Pune gives the film a pleasant look.

Both Farouque Shaikh and Kirron Kher vie for top honours. It’s a pleasure to watch Farouque Shaikh after a hiatus. He pitches in an incredible performance. Kirron Kher is lovely, graceful, so talented. In a deglam look, Tansuhree Dutta gets to display her talent. She’s top notch. Ditto for Ankur Khanna, who’s getting better with every film.

Masumeh looks every inch the seductress and gets to perform in the latter part. She’s efficient. Amongst housewives, Lilette Dubey, Sharon Prabhakar and Shehnaz Anand are all lovable, so lively that you take to them instantly. Sudhanshu Pandey is effective in a brief role.

On the whole, SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX is interesting in parts. At the box-office, it has fair chances at select cities.

Debutante director Jaideep Varma picks up a story you can identify with, especially by those living in Mumbai. And the humour injected in the narrative makes you break into uncontrollable laughter at times. But Jaideep Varma, the director is letdown by Jaideep Varma, the writer.

Here’s why! After setting up things so beautifully in the first hour, you expect an encore in the second hour. But it’s not engaging at all. In fact, it’s a repetition of what you’ve watched in the first half. The story stagnates and the movie hardly moves. Clearly, the writing in this hour lacks meat.

In a nutshell, HULLA makes you whistle intermittently, not after having watched it in totality.

Raj [Sushant Singh], an aggressive broker in a broking firm and Abha [Kartikadevi Rane], a marketing professional move into a new 2-bedroom flat in a Mumbai suburb. Cracks start appearing in their ideal existence when Raj, a light sleeper, is disturbed by noises at nights.

Finally, one night, Raj goes down to investigate and discovers that it is the night watchman blowing the whistle periodically in the night to scare thieves away. Raj scolds the watchman and forbids him from making any further noise, but the Secretary of the building Janardhan [Rajat Kapoor] insists on the whistling continuing in lieu of the building security.

An issue that starts out lightly and amusingly trivial begins to escalate to take the shape of a serious problem for Raj. Not being able to sleep at night begins to take a serious toll on him, both professionally and personally. At work, he becomes edgy and his usual smart sense of judgment suffers. At home, he becomes obsessed with any loud noises in the environment.

Making people laugh is tough, but HULLA makes you break into a smile, at times laughter, even guffaws at vital points. The sheer novelty of the subject and its execution catches you unaware. While there’s consistency in terms of execution, it’s the written material that’s inconsistent.

The Chief Minister’s track is completely unwarranted. Also, there’s not much clarity as to how Sushant and Rajat’s lives move from bad to worse in the finale. A simpler way to conclude the story would’ve worked wonders.

Jaideep Varma has the makings of a fine storyteller, although he needs to brush up on technique. Also, the film could’ve done with better production values. Paramvir Singh’s cinematography is strictly okay.

Both Sushant and Rajat enact their parts convincingly. It helps when you cast such competent actors. Kartikadevi Rane is efficient. Mandeep Mazumdar is perfect. Vrajesh Hirjee is natural. Darshan Jariwala throws that cold look most convincingly. The actor enacting the role of the security guard is excellent.

On the whole, HULLA has an entertaining first hour, but is letdown by a loose second half. At the box-office, it caters to select multiplexes of select cities only. However, for the producers, it’s a profitable venture since the shoe-string budget and the recovery from theatrical and non-theatrical avenues should ensure neat profits.

The Last Lear - Now Dubbed in Hindi

“Well, it [dubbing in Hindi] isn’t ruled out,” Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee of Planman [the producers of THE LAST LEAR] tells me, “However, we will take a call only after we gauge the public feedback.” Incidentally, noted writer/actor Saurabh Shukla has been assigned the responsibility of writing the Hindi script.

Salman and Katrina to star in Subhash Ghai

9xMP3 got in touch with Subhash Ghai to confirm the details. “Yes, Salman and I have spoken about doing one more film together after Yuvraaj. It is a complete entertainer that talks about today’s youth. We will start the film only towards the end of next year (2009) since Salman’s dates also need to be available and even I need time to work on the script. As for Katrina, she has been signed by Mukta Arts for 3 films, so she will also be a part of this project in all probability.”

Only recently, we had informed you of Ghai’s plans to start a film with Dilip Kumar in a pivotal role. So is this the same film? “No no…the film I am planning with Dilip Saab is different film altogether. It’s a light hearted entertainer which will appeal even to the youngsters. Dilipji would be playing a pivotal role of an 85 year old man in the film. This film (starring Dilip Kumar) will start first after I am done with Yuvraaj and I plan to wrap it in around 4 months,” signed off the Showman of Bollywood.

Now the winning combo has teamed up for the second time in GOLMAAL RETURNS. And the second instalment of the GOLMAAL franchise promises even more fun. How do we know that? GOLMAAL RETURNS promises double dhamaal as there’s glamour in abundance this time. Besides a bevy of beauties [Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley and Anjana Sukhani], there’s a new actor in place of Sharman Joshi. It’s Shreyas Talpade.

What does one look forward to in the promo and also in those two songs? We won’t reveal much, but here’s something that you can relish… In Ajay’s debut-making film PHOOL AUR KAANTE, the actor made a grand entry atop two moving bikes. The same feat was repeated in GOLMAAL. Now watch Ajay atop two Hummers, while Kareena makes an entry on a sports bike.

The title song has all the germs to be a chartbuster. The energy is infectious and you’re hooked on to it the moment you watch it. But the song that also catches your attention is the one where Ajay and Arshad are at loggerheads. Right from bows and arrows to blasts, this song has it all. The makers have spent a fortune [Rs. 2.5 cr.?] on this number.

If the songs of GOLMAAL RETURNS are an indication of what is to follow, expect a laugh-riot to explode this Diwali.

All the apprehensions whether Bani of ‘Kasamh Se’ will shine on the big screen can now be cast aside. Prachi Desai has made a terrific start in Bollywood with her first film Rock On .

Very reluctantly she made a transition from television to tinsel town. And it’s a decision Prachi won’t ever regret.
For even before the release of ‘Rock On’, Prachi was signed on by Sunil Shetty for two films and the director duo Abbas-Mastan for a romantic thriller.

Now, when Prachi has shown her potential with a brilliant performance in ‘Rock On’, directors and producers are queuing up to sign her for their projects.

The first one to get Prachi is Mukesh Bhatt . The producer has signed her for a film titled Jashan with Adhyayan who’s beginning his career afresh after a super-debacle called Haal-e-Dil . It is learnt that ‘Jashan’s director duo Hasnain and Raksha saw ‘Rock On’ and were very impressed by Prachi’s performance in it.

The director duo expressed their wish to have Prachi in ‘Jashan’ to producer Mukesh Bhatt, who met the actress and signed her on for the project.

According to B-Town buzz, after ‘Rock On’, Prachi has made it to the wish-lists of many filmmakers. Another actress who has benefited from the film is Shahana Goswami , who played Arjun Rampal ’s pesky wife in the film.

Salman Khan Veer

The flick is set to create a new record in Bollywood, topping even other big movies like London Dreams , which has been sold for a whopping Rs 120 crores to Studio 18, or Hrithik Roshan ’s Kites , which has fetched an equally mammoth amount of Rs 120 crores from Eros International.

But ‘Veer’, being produced by Vijay Galani, seems to be in a different league altogether. The movie has reportedly been offered the humungous amount of Rs 150 crores for its worldwide rights from a top production house in Bollywood.

The reason why ‘Veer’ is being seen as such a hot proposition is because its story is written by Salman himself. The movie, directed by Anil Sharma , is a period drama starring Salman, Sohail Khan and Mithun Chakraborty . Salman’s leading lady in the movie would be a debutante, who, it is rumoured, looks almost like Katrina Kaif .

Salman, who recently claimed in an interview that he is the highest paid actor in Bollywood, would certainly be happy about the huge offers that are being made for ‘Veer’. If anything, the movie will make him a hotter property than his friend-turned-foe Shahrukh Khan .
